Sinciput_PHP 1.0 Released

Stable release of the web-based scholarly note taking tool.

Author: M Butcher
Date: 2006-01-07 01:07:48 -0600

This is the first release of the Sinciput scholarly note taking and source tracking application.

Sinciput has been under development for over a year (building on the already stable core Pilaster framework). It is stable, feature-complete, and ready for use.

Sinciput is released free of charge under the GNU General Public License (GPL), version 2. Download Sinciput here.

This version of Sinciput features:
  • Integration with the U.S. Library of Congress
  • Note taking with browser-based rich text editor
  • Cross-reference support within the Sinciput database
  • Free-form topic maps
  • A built-in search engine
  • Dynamically build catalogs of authors and subject headings
  • A build-in dictionary that queries dictionary servers around the Web.
  • A journal for tracking your progress and ideas
  • Password protection
  • Sorting by title, date, author, etc.
  • A full suite of administration tools for managing your data, backing up valuable research, and optimizing performace.
  • Keyword highlighting and comment highlighting
  • Support for large numbers of sources and notes.
  • A fast note-viewing AJAX interface
  • And scores of other useful features.

Technical Requirements

This version of the Sinciput server only runs on Linux/Apache/PHP 4.2+. (It has been tested on PHP5, as well.) It will not run on Windows. It has not been tested on Mac OSX or other UNIX variants, though it very well may run on them.

PHP needs DOMXML and DBA (DB Abstraction). Sinciput does not use a relational database.

Sinciput_PHP is a web-based application. While Firefox is the preferred (and most tested) browser, Sinciput will also function fine with MS Internet Explorer.
