Anadem

A directory-based approach to document management

Author: M Butcher
Date: 2005-01-10 20:26:47 -0600

Anadem is a document management system for large collections of documents. Written in Java, Anadem uses an LDAP directory to store document metadata. While most document management applications use a relational database (and a relational model) to store information, Anadem takes a more intuitive approach: it stores documents in a hierarchy. This better reflects not only the structure of documents, but also of theorganizations that produce those documents. For example, HR documents can be stored together, accessed together, and secured from access by other departments.

Technical Details:
Anadem is written in pure Java, and runs in a servlet container (such as Tomcat). All document metadata is stored in an LDAP directory server (OpenLDAP or other standards compliant LDAP servers), and the files themselves may either be stored in the file system or in the directory. Anadem can use XML and XSLT to transform and style documents, or it can be used strictly to control and store documents.

The Anadem project started in 2001. Currently, the project is in incubation. Much of the structure of Caryatid is an offshoot of Anadem.
