Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) Linux on a Toshiba Satellite R-15 TabletPC

Updates since Ubuntu 5.10

I have now updated my tablet successfully to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (aka Dapper Drake). This is an update to my previous article on configuring Ubuntu 5.04-5.10 for a Toshiba Satellite R-15 Tablet. If you are looking for information about configuring the Wacom Tablet, you may want to read How I configured my Toshiba Satellite R-15 TabletPC.

Sound: Works fine.
802.11b/g: Works fine.
Ethernet: Works fine.
USB 2.0: Works fine (ehci, uhci).
Touchpad: Works fine.
Video: Works fine (1024x768).
Framebuffer Video: Works fine (vesafb, vesa16fb).
CD-RW/DVD-ROM: Works fine (Haven't tried recording in 6.06).
Wacom Tablet: Untested in 6.06.
Tablet Buttons: Works fine (With tweaking).
PCMCIA: Untested.
Suspend (ACPI): Needs Configuring.
Hibernate (ACPI): Occasionally does not wake up (WiFi related?).
Firewire: Untested (ohci_1394 was modprobe'd, though).
MMC (SanDisk) Reader: Works fine for reading and writing.

Tablet Config

IMPORTANT: The wacom device name has changed. It is no longer /dev/wacom0. Now it is /dev/wacom.

You will need to change your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and xorg-tablet.conf) to reflect this change.

With that in mind, read this for more information.

Applications

OpenLDAP: The version of OpenLDAP that 6.06 uses is ancient. Upgrade to 2.3.24 or later.

Skype: Skype 1.2 does not work on Ubuntu (mainly due to Skype's bad audio support). Upgrading to Skype 1.3 and using the ALSA settings fixed the issue.

Firefox 1.5: Surprisingly, it has been unstable on 6.06. It crashes about once a day, with no core file, no error message, nada.

Other Notes

Laptop Mode: In /etc/default/acpi-support, there are a number of options for configuring power management. One of these is "Laptop Mode." In the past, I've enabled this on Ubuntu. However, with 6.06, the power saving is too aggressive, and the hard drive spins down too often, causing (a) lag, and (b) more battery usage, as the disk has to spin back up again too often. For example, while typing in vi, I will usually experience lag every two or three minutes because of the hard drive.

There is probably a way to tweak the hard drive power conservation settings.

Otherwise, I have ACPI set to suspend to mem. I should probably change this to standby, and test that. HIBERNATE is set to use shutdown instead of platform. Changing that might make a difference, too.

TouchPad: It seems that with every release the touchpad sensitivity changes drastically. 6.06 is much more sensitive than 5.10, and it can get irritating. I have not bothered fine-tuning. I may try a different X.org driver, too.
