The term "widget" has gone through it's share of definitions. But these days, the term is used to refer to small functional bits of "eye candy" for web sites.

Aleph-Null will be introducing a few light-weight widgets built in Javascript (as opposed to Flash, which we don't like very much). Look for some cool items coming soon, beginning with the Technosophos RSS Widget, a RSS-reading widget that romps through your RSS feed, displaying one pretty item after another.
