RSS Widget (Javascript and AJAX)A Widget for Elegant Feed Display
Author: M Butcher No more bullet lists for your news items. The RSS Widget presents a pleasant alternative: let the widget cycle through the news for you. Gone are the big black dots. Now, you've got headlines fading in and out. We are already using this widget on our site (If you are using a supported browser, it should be displaying on the right side of your screen right now). Download RSSWidget-1.0-beta2. How RSS Widget WorksThe RSS Widget uses Javascript technology to fetch a local RSS feed and then display the feed contents. The widget iterates through the items in the feed, displaying one item at a time. Using some elegant fading effects, the widget present information cleanly. We have done our best to make the API easy to use, too. For example, it is easy to tie events like mouseovers and mouseouts to the widget. Pause the widget when a users mouses over it, and continue when the user's mouse leaves the area. Don't like our choice of background images? That's okay with us. We're not exactly known for our brilliant artwork... but we did make it easy to change the background. Just set a configuration parameter before loading the widget, and you can use your own background image. Other common settings can also be changed with ease. Want to take our code and run with it? We've released this widget under the MIT license, which grants you the freedom to take the code, modify it to your heart's content, and do with it what you wish. You can use it in your proprietary code without having to do so much as mention it to us! (Of course, if you'd like some custom features, we're also happy to provide consulting services.) Our widget makes use of the fantastic jQuery library. jQuery is bundled with our release, so you don't need to download anything extra. The widget has been tested with RSS 1 and 2 content. As far as we know, RSS Widget works on all of the platforms that jQuery supports (IE 6+, Firefox 1.5+, Safari 2.0+, and Opera 9.0+). It also seems to work fairly well on Konqueror 3.5.6, though the fading effects are missing. |
